Law, Rights, and Responsibilities

Elementary Teaching Unit

The Law-Related Education Resource Committee of the American Lawyers Auxiliary has two aims, namely, to assist educators in providing an opportunity for elementary students in grades three to five gain an introductory understanding of laws, rights and responsibilities and to recognize teachers having high interest in and dedication to teaching law-related education. The teaching unit, Laws, Rights and Responsibilities, includes a videotape and lesson plans and is sent free upon request. This unit supports several of the National Standards and Criteria for Government and Civics for grades 3, 4, and 5.

After completing the unit, we invite the students in your class to participate in our annual Olive D. Leary Student Recognition Award contest. For this contest we ask students to state in written form their reactions to the study about laws, rights and responsibilities (how the study helped them, which lessons they liked the best, etc.). We ask the teacher to comment on the appropriateness of the unit for students at this level, interest of students, outcomes, etc. The first place award for the student is $100. By completing the unit, teachers are eligible for our $1,000 Teacher of the Year award. Entries must be received by Elaine Ross on or before April 10. Should you have any questions about the competition, or incorporating your ideas in the units, please feel free to contact me:
